Helge Dorsch was born in Penzberg/Bavaria. He studied conducting, piano and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. He also attended summer courses with Prof. Hans Swarowsky in Ossiach and Vienna.
His career began at the age of 20 as a solo répétiteur at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Shortly afterwards, he was engaged by the Salzburg Festival as an assistant to Riccardo Muti and Claudio Abbado. This was followed by engagements at the Bayreuth Festival as an assistant to renowned conductors and at the Bregenz Festival, where he was appointed Studienleiter in 1990.
As an associate of Valerij Gergiev, he worked at the Baden-Baden Festival.
Subsequent guest engagements took him to Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Bonn, Essen, Dortmund, Mannheim, Ankara, Istanbul, Tehran, Reykjavik, Budapest, Bucharest, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Riga, Minsk, Prague, Lisbon, Barcelona, Rome (Teatro dell’Opera and RAI), Bologna, Venice, Turin, Reggio nell’Emilia, Palermo, Catania, Cagliari, Nice, Bordeaux, Paris (Opéra Bastille and Opéra Garnier), as well as to the USA, Canada, South America, Central America, South Africa, Japan, China, Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
He worked together with singers such as Luciano Pavarotti, Mirella Freni, Hermann Prey, Brigitte Fassbaender, Eva Marton, Monserrat Caballé, René Kollo, José Carreras and Plácido Domingo, to name just a few.
At the age of 28, he was appointed professor at the State University of Music Detmold.
In 1997/98, he was appointed guest professor at the University of Music Munich, the same university at which he had studied.
In 2003, he was appointed professor at the State Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf.
Additional guest professorships and teaching assignments took him, among others, to the State University of Music “Franz Liszt” in Weimar and the State University of Music “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin, where he has been teaching since 2006.
He is regularly invited to give masterclasses in Ankara, both at Ankara University and at the State Conservatory in Ankara. Further masterclasses regularly took him to China.
In recent years, he has attracted attention with conducting engagements in Munich (Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor at the newly opened Prinzregententheater), in Moscow (opening of the 1998/99 concert season with the Tchaikovsky Radio Symphony Orchestra), in Budapest with a double debut (State Opera and Erkel Theatre), likewise with a double debut in Shanghai (Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Opera House), as well as with symphony and New Year's concerts in China, which were broadcast nationwide on television, and with concerts and opera productions in New Jersey/USA.
He also conducted New Year's concerts in Bonn, China and the USA as well as gala concerts with, among others, Lucia Aliberti, Katia Ricciarelli, Franco Bonisolli and star singers of the Bayreuth Festival and the Vienna State Opera.
From 1998–2003, Helge Dorsch was chief conductor of the Loreley Festival on the Rhine. As part of this festival, founded in 1997 and for many years Germany's largest touring theatre, he successfully conducted Fidelio (1997), Carmen (1998), Der Freischütz (1999), Die Zauberflöte (2000), Nabucco (2001), La Traviata (2002), Carmen (2003).
From 2000–2002, he was also chief conductor of the Opera of New Jersey/USA.
Since 2004, Helge Dorsch has been Studienleiter and conductor at the Tyrolean Festival in Erl/Austria.
He was additionally engaged by the Bregenz Festival in 2008 as Studienleiter for the opera production Karl V by K. Krenek.
In addition, in 2008 he was invited by the Opéra Bastille Opera Studio (Atelier Lyrique) in Paris to prepare several concerts as well as an opera concert for the Louvre and the Palais Garnier.
In 2008, Prof. H. Helge Dorsch also founded the music school at the Aalto-Theater in Essen (European Capital of Culture in 2010).
In the same year, he was engaged by the Dutch National Opera Amsterdam for the production Frau ohne Schatten by R. Strauss.
In the Olympic year 2008, he was engaged as conductor for two gala concerts at the newly built National Grand Theatre in Beijing, followed by a guest performance in Hohhot/Mongolia.
In 2009, masterclasses took him once again to China (Beijing and Suzhou). In the same year, he was engaged by the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow to prepare the famous opera house's first German-language opera production, Alban Berg's Wozzeck.
In 2010, he completed a masterclass at the “Academy of Young Singers of the Mariinsky Theatre” in St. Petersburg. In the same year, he prepared Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Latvian National Opera in Riga and also gave a masterclass for opera singers there.
In the summer, preparations for Wagner's Tannhäuser and Meistersinger von Nürnberg followed at the Tyrolean Festival in Austria; in the autumn, masterclasses were held at the State Conservatory in Tashkent.
The year 2012 began with preparations at the Metropolitan Opera New York. This was followed by workshops at the Accademia di Montegral, in Ankara and a masterclass at the Conservatory of Mantua/Italy. The Tyrolean Festival followed again with the preparation of Lohengrin, further masterclasses in Tashkent as well as symphony concerts in China, Poland and the USA, gala concerts with the “German Tenors” in Munich, Potsdam, Dortmund, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Shanghai, Vienna and many other cities, as well as participation in the 1st Tyrolean Winter Festival at the newly built festival hall in Erl/Tyrol and a gala concert on the Loreley open-air stage with star singers of the Arena di Verona.
The year 2013 began with a gala concert in Bayreuth with the “German Tenor” Johannes Groß on the occasion of Richard Wagner's 200th birthday. This was followed by a masterclass for young opera singers at the State Music Academy in Riga (Jazepls Vitols Latvian Academy of Music), as well as further masterclasses at the Accademia di Montegral in Lucca/Italy and at the Conservatory of Mantua/Italy, and symphony concerts in the USA and China. He was also invited by the Latvian National Opera Riga to prepare Die Walküre.
The year 2014 began with workshops and masterclasses in New York/USA and Mantua/Italy, followed by another masterclass in Ankara, concerts in China, the Tyrolean Summer Festival (revival of Ring des Nibelungen), masterclasses in Rimini/Italy (Instituto Superiore di Studi Musicali G. Lettimi) as well as masterclasses and concerts in Buenos Aires/Argentina (IUNA, Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte), followed by the Tyrolean Winter Festival 2014/15.
At the beginning of 2015, Helge Dorsch received an engagement at the Berlin State Opera for the new production Parsifal as an associate of Daniel Barenboim. This was followed by masterclasses in Lucca/Italy (Accademia di Montegral) and Mantua/Italy (Conservatory), as well as gala concerts with the “Stars of the Arena of Verona” and the Frankfurt Symphoniker in several cities in Germany.
In addition, Daniel Barenboim invited him to give a masterclass at the International Opera Studio of the Berlin State Opera. This was followed by a masterclass at the Instituto Superior de Arte in the “Golden Hall” of the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires/Argentina.
The year 2015 also included engagements at the Tyrolean Summer Festival for the Ring des Nibelungen and the subsequent China tour, during which the Tyrolean Festival performed the complete Ring, Meistersinger and Tristan und Isolde for the first time in Beijing and Shanghai.
The year 2016 began with masterclasses at the Opera Academy Schloss Henfenfeld, followed by a China tour with masterclasses and concerts in 10 different cities, the first tour of its kind in China.
In April, he returned to China to conduct the opening concert of the new opera house in Beijing at the Century Hall.
In May 2016, the farewell tour of the world-famous tenor René Kollo, conducted by Helge Dorsch, began, followed by gala concerts “Italienische Nacht” with international star singers and the Frankfurt Symphoniker.
In 2016, the opera and concert company “Orpheus European Classics” was also founded, and Helge Dorsch was appointed its artistic director and chief conductor. The first activity of “Orpheus European Classics” was a Germany tour with a new production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte followed by a guest performance in Italy.
This was followed by a tour with the “German Tenors”, which also travelled through several German cities, and another masterclass at the International Opera Studio of the Berlin State Opera. In 2016, Helge Dorsch was additionally appointed music director and chief conductor of the new opera house in Beijing/China (Laiyin Opera House, Beijing/China), which made its debut in the 2016/17 season under his direction with a new production of Verdi's La Traviata featuring an international cast of singers.
The year 2017 began with concerts in Vienna (Konzerthaus) with star tenor René Kollo as part of his Austrian farewell tour. Helge Dorsch conducted an ensemble of the Vienna Philharmonic. This was followed by a masterclass at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and rehearsals for Aida with Plácido Domingo at the Vienna State Opera.
In spring 2017, Helge Dorsch gave masterclasses at the Eva Lind Music Academy in Mösern/Seefeld/Tyrol/Austria, then at the Conservatorio di Matova (Conservatory of Mantua) and at the International Opera Studio of the Berlin State Opera, followed by a gala concert at the Century Hall in Beijing/China.
The year 2018 began with a continuation of star tenor René Kollo's Austrian farewell tour with concerts in Graz (Congress), Linz (Brucknerhaus) and Salzburg (Mozarteum). Helge Dorsch again conducted an ensemble of the Vienna Philharmonic.
This was followed by another masterclass at the Private University of Music and Arts in Vienna as well as in Berlin (Staatsoper unter den Linden), at the Conservatory of Mantua/Italy and in Buenos Aires, at the Teatro Colón (Instituto Superior de Arte) and also at the Universidad de las Artes sonoras.
This was followed by gala concerts (“Italienische Nacht”) with the Frankfurt Symphoniker as well as preparations for the Tyrolean Easter gala production (Parsifal) and the Ring des Nibelungen at the summer festival, and another China tour. The same year also saw a new production of Bizet's Carmen under his direction with an international star cast at the New Opera of Peking/China.
In autumn 2018, in addition to his position as chief conductor in Beijing, he was appointed chief conductor and music director of the Opera Festival Buenos Aires. He made his debut in December 2018 with a production of Puccini's Turandot.
In autumn 2018, Helge Dorsch also made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonie with the musical direction of the gala concert “Die Mailänder Scala kommt nach Berlin”.
The year 2019 included concerts and gala concerts “Italienische Nacht” with the Frankfurt Symphoniker and the Rhein-Main-Philharmoniker and an international line-up of opera singers in several cities in Germany.
This was joined by gala concerts with the orchestra of the New Opera of Peking and the orchestra of the Opera Festival Buenos Aires. Helge Dorsch gave masterclasses in various cities in China, Buenos Aires (Universidad de las Artes sonoras), Mantua (Conservatory), Vienna (Private University of Music and Arts) and Berlin (Staatsoper unter den Linden).
Another invitation to the Berlin Philharmonie also took him to Berlin with the “German Tenors”. A new production of Puccini's Tosca as part of the Opera Festival Buenos Aires attracted international attention, as did a gala concert at the Usina del Arte, Buenos Aires, featuring Brahms's 1st Symphony and excerpts from R. Wagner's Walküre, with the participation of international star singers.
The year 2020 began with New Year's concerts in several cities in China and a tour in the USA, as well as a masterclass in Tsingtao/China and another masterclass at the International Opera Studio of the Berlin State Opera under the Linden. Due to the worldwide coronavirus crisis, numerous guest performances were cancelled, including a new production of Bizet's Carmen in Buenos Aires, Aida in Beijing and the conducting of the closing concert of the 1st International José Carreras Singing Competition in Shenzhen/China.
In August, Helge Dorsch was invited as the only conductor worldwide to the Singers' Academy of the Metropolitan Opera New York for online courses and concerts.
In October 2021, he made his debut at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, where he conducted a gala concert with the Rhein-Main-Philharmoniker featuring Metropolitan Opera star Zeljko Lucic.
In 2022, his contract as music director of the Opera Festival Buenos Aires was extended. In June 2022, he conducted the new production of G. Verdi's Otello there, followed by the “Gala of the 3 South American Tenors” in November.
In February 2023, he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera. This was followed by a tour of Switzerland with the Swiss tenor Peter Bernhard, during which works by Richard Wagner were performed, including at the Richard Wagner Museum in Lucerne.
In April, Dorsch conducted a tour of Germany with the Slovak Sinfonietta Zilina, one of Europe's finest chamber orchestras, followed by masterclasses and concerts in Tsingdao/China.
In summer 2023, he conducted several open-air gala concerts “Italienische Nächte” with the Frankfurt Symphoniker.
In September 2023, the first European guest performance of the “New Opera of Peking” took place under his baton, establishing a collaboration between Chinese singers and European musicians, in this case with the Hungarian National Symphony Orchestra Miskolc. This guest performance took place as part of the cultural peace project “Musikalische Seidenstraße”.
It was so successful that not only was Helge Dorsch's contract as music director of the “New Opera of Peking” extended, but he was also appointed artistic and musical director of China's largest youth orchestra, the Philharmonic Youth Orchestra of Beijing.
In 2024, Helge Dorsch conducted the opera productions Der fliegende Holländer and Hänsel und Gretel at the Opera Festival Buenos Aires.
This year also saw his conducting debut in Prague with the Smetana Philharmonic Orchestra Prague. At the Alte Oper Frankfurt, he conducted the GREAT WAGNER GALA with world star Andreas Schager.
On the 200th anniversary of B. Smetana's birth, he conducted a symphony concert with the “Smetana Philharmonic Orchestra Prague” in Prague.
Due to the great success, he was appointed “First Guest Conductor” of this orchestra.
In 2024, masterclasses also took him to Qingdao/China, Mantua/Italy and the Bel Canto Institute of Lucca/Italy.
The year 2025 included opera productions of W. A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, J. Strauß’ Die Fledermaus and G. Verdi's Don Carlo in Buenos Aires. In addition, there were gala and symphony concerts in Europe, South America and China.
His concert “Emociones sin Límites” (“Emotions Without Limits”) with the renowned countertenor Luchi de Gyldenfeldt at the Alliance Française in Buenos Aires attracted attention.
This concert was selected for the series “Die besten Konzerte Südamerikas” and will be repeated in this context at the University of Buenos Aires in 2025.
In 2026, in addition to masterclasses and concerts in China, Italy, Ankara, Prague, Bayreuth and the USA, the new opera productions G. Puccini's La Bohème and W. A. Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Opera Festival Buenos Aires are among the planned engagements.
Following an innovative symphony concert in Prague, “Classic Meets Film Music”, he was appointed 1st Guest Conductor of the Smetana Philharmonic Orchestra Prague.
On 29 August 2026, a gala concert marking the 10th anniversary of the New Opera of Peking/China took place at the Musikverein Vienna (Golden Hall).
As an accompanist for Lieder recitals, he has worked with singers such as Hermann Prey, Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Katia Ricciarelli, Gwyneth Jones, James King, Francisco Araiza, Edith Mathis, Karl Ridderbusch, Oskar Hillebrandt, Jan-Hendrik Rootering, Ortrun Wenkel, Kurt Moll and many others.
As a pianist, he attracted attention with his CD recording “Liebestraum”, Pearls of Romantic Piano Literature.
As a composer, he has created song cycles celebrating music around the world, including his “Mexican Songbook” as well as “Brazilian, Anatolian, Haitian und Greenlandic Songbooks”. In addition, with his composition “Funeral March for a devastated Environment”, he has advocated for the preservation of the tropical rainforest in Brazil.
In addition to his German mother tongue, Helge Dorsch speaks English, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Russian and Chinese.
Helge Dorsch has been praised in the international press not only for his detailed and brilliant interpretations, but also for his enthusiastic, temperamental and expressive musicianship, which lends each score new brilliance and fresh élan.
